Business health insurance frequently asked questions
Business health insurance is available from just 1 employee. Sole traders and directors can take out a policy for themselves, and most group policies start from 2 employees. Some insurers require a minimum of 3 or 5 employees for group cover, but this varies. Our advisers will identify which insurers and products are best suited to your company size.
Business health insurance premiums are generally tax deductible as a business expense, meaning the company can claim them against corporation tax. However, the benefit is treated as a Benefit in Kind (BIK) for employees, which means it is subject to income tax and National Insurance contributions. We recommend seeking advice from your accountant for guidance specific to your situation.
Business health insurance typically covers specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, in-patient and day-patient hospital treatment, cancer cover and a digital GP service. Optional add-ons often include mental health support, physiotherapy, dental and optical cover, and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). The exact cover depends on the policy and level of cover your business chooses.
Yes st group health insurance policies allow employees to add their partner and dependent children to the plan, usually at an additional cost to either the employer or the employee. This can significantly enhance the value of the benefit and is something many employees look for when evaluating a job offer.
The cost depends on the number of employees, their ages, the level of cover chosen and the insurer. Group policies often offer better value per person than individual policies. Our advisers will gather your requirements and compare the market to present you with options that suit your budget, from basic to comprehensive cover.
When an employee leaves, their cover under the group policy ends. Many insurers offer a "continuation option" which allows the departing employee to take out their own individual policy without needing to provide further medical evidence. This can be a valuable benefit for employees and should be considered when choosing a group policy.
