Family health insurance frequently asked questions
A family health insurance policy typically covers the policy holder, their partner and dependent children. The number of children that can be included varies by insurer some cover an unlimited number of children, while others may have a limit. Children are usually covered up to the age of 18 (or up to 21–25 if in full-time education). Our advisers will help you find the most suitable policy for your specific family setup.
Often yes a family policy can be more cost-effective than arranging separate individual policies for each family member, as children are typically added at a significantly lower cost than adults. The exact savings will depend on the ages and circumstances of all family members. Our advisers will compare both options and recommend what gives you the best value.
Most insurers include children from birth up to age 18, or up to age 21–25 if they remain in full-time education. Some insurers also offer free child cover meaning your children are included at no additional premium as a standard feature of their family policies. Our advisers will highlight these options when comparing policies for you.
As with individual policies, pre-existing conditions are generally excluded on new family policies. Each family member's medical history is assessed separately. However, moratorium underwriting options are available with some insurers, which may allow previously excluded conditions to become covered after a period without symptoms or treatment. Our advisers will explain the underwriting options available for your family.
Yes most insurers allow you to add newborn children to your policy and make changes at your annual renewal. Mid-term changes (such as adding a newborn) are usually straightforward. Removing family members is also possible, though this may be subject to the policy terms. We assist with any mid-term changes throughout the life of your policy.
The cost of family health insurance depends on the ages of the adults included, where you live, the level of cover chosen, and your excess. Younger adults with children can typically access family cover from around £60–£100 per month for the whole family, though this varies significantly. Getting a personalised quote is the best way to understand exactly what your family's cover will cost.
